What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy and Physical Therapy are in fact interchangeable synonyms. If we must make a distinction, it could be that in some parts of the world, such as Europe (where my family is from), the profession is known as physiotherapy while in the US we call it physical therapy. Additionally, some practitioners suggest that physiotherapy is more concerned with manual therapy, meaning that hands-on techniques are frequently-used interventions.

My preference in PT is to apply both: hands-on AND an exercise-based approach, with special attention on teaching patients which muscles to strengthen and how, while improving muscular symmetry and enhancing physical performance.  Physical Therapy and Physiotherapy both carry a medical background and focus on the rehab and prevention of injury, improvement of flexibility, and the management of pain.

As a massage therapist- you can probably guess the value I place on the power of manual therapy to address the issues and injuries of my patients and clients, making it an obvious choice for me to include 'physiotherapy' in the title of my practice.
